MELBOURNE RESEARCH UNIT FOR FACIAL DISORDERS (MRUFD)

The D3 group

The Melbourne Research Unit for Facial Disorders (MRUFD) was established in 2001 following a benefaction to the University of Melbourne by philanthropists Allan and Maria Myers. The MRUFD translational science network was based at the Department of Paediatrics in the Royal Children's Hospital Melbourne and over time became a pioneering force at translating science into social good. MRUFD's novel mission to 'Help Children Smile' – through harnessing a unique combination of expertise in basic science and paediatrics (medicine & dentistry) – was rewarded with multiple achievements including establishment of The D3 Group (D3G). In 2025, steps were initiated to disestablish MRUFD and absorb its charitable elements into D3G. To memorialise MRUFD's massive accomplishments and the multi-tiered charitable giving behind them, D3G has produced a timeline infographic and memorial booklet outlining the peerless 'MRUFD Story'. As we look back at a challenging journey with pride, we hope readers find it equally informative and inspirational. Enquiries for further detail are welcomed (contact)

MRUFD LAB (HUBBARD GROUP)

The MRUFD laboratory was established at the University of Melbourne in 2003 by career biochemist Mike Hubbard (Professorial Fellow, Oral and Facial Science) and lab manager, biochemist Jon Mangum. After initial hosting at Melbourne Dental School, the Hubbard Group relocated to the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics, facilitating strong interactions between basic and applied biomedical science. Between 2003 and 2023, the Hubbard group attracted substantial funding, trained numerous students, and published many innovative findings. At basic science level, the standout highlight was a 100-year breakthrough about the molecular foundations of chalky enamel which opened the door to medical prevention of chalky molars/Molar Hypomin (read more). Translationally, other highlights were publication of two online educational resources (D3G, Chalky Teeth Campaign), a children's storybook about chalky molars, and a patent for detecting chalky enamel.
